Skills for Care Nursing Update September 2025

Social Care Student Nurse Placement Strategy Launched
In July 2025 a Strategy to enable social care placements for student nurses and nursing associates was launched, commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care. This involved strong collaboration between DHSC, Skills for Care, the Council of Deans of Health, higher education institutions, and care providers. The aim is to make opportunities for social care placements for every student nurse.

Register now for social care preceptorship sessions starting September 2025
This autumn we’ll be running a series of free sessions aimed at supporting your organisation to run a successful preceptorship programme.

Preceptorship programmes are a vital part of the support required to recruit and retain registered nurses and nursing associates who are new to the NMC register.
There are two separate sessions, running through September, October and November, for those people in your nursing team who could carry out the following roles - one would be a preceptorship lead, who would lead on this for the organisation, and then other nursing staff who could act as preceptors.

For more information and to book your place:
· Preceptorship lead workshop: Embedding and championing preceptorship
· New-to-role preceptor workshop: The preceptor role in practice

World Alzheimer’s Day — 21 September

Each year on 21 September, communities worldwide observe World Alzheimer’s Day, raising awareness about dementia, supporting caregivers, and highlighting advances in care and research.

Why It Matters for Home & Social Care
  • Dementia is a leading cause of dependency in older people, and many live in their own homes rather than in institutional settings.
  • Quality homecare is vital for people with dementia to remain safe, supported, and connected in their familiar environments.
  • Carers (paid or unpaid) often face unique challenges such as behavioral changes, communication difficulties, and the emotional toll of long-term support.
Key Messages & Themes
  • Dignity and Person-centred Care: Every individual living with dementia deserves to be treated as a person first—not defined by their condition.
  • Supporting Carers: Caregivers need not just training and respite, but emotional support, peer networks, and recognition for the crucial role they play.
  • Integration & Coordination: Seamless collaboration between health, social services, and voluntary sectors is essential to deliver holistic care at home.
  • Innovation in Homecare: From telecare, smart homes, and assistive tech to tailored social programs — innovation helps people remain independent longer.
